Dangers of refrigerating certain fruit

Dangers of refrigerating certain fruit

BANANAS
Bananas should not be kept in the fridge because at a cold temperature, the enzymes that enable them to ripen, are inhibited. Some of the enzymes cause cell damage, while browning enzymes cause the skin to blacken.  We don't want bananas looking like these do we?

MELON
Whole melons like watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew should be kept on the kitchen counter rather than in the fridge (USDA research found that storage at room temperature helps to keep the antioxidants better intact). Yes - the watermelon is square.  They come in heart-shaped too!

BERRIES
These should only be kept in the fridge for long term storage or they become soggy.

STONE FRUIT
Peaches, apricots, nectarines and plums need to ripen at room temperature BEFORE it can be stored in the fridge for a short period of time.

*Bananas, avocados, citrus fruits, pineapples, tomatoes, and melons all do best if stored at around 10°C

Visit this link to access your very own refrigerator storage chart that details the appropriate length of storage of fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry and other foods.

Diabetes and Fruits

In Trinidad and Tobago, teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15 are overweight and more than 40% have at least one risk factor of developing diabetes.

The HCC (Healthy Caribbean Coalition) expressed desires of “the whole of society approach” to help alleviate NCD’s (non-communicable diseases).

Likewise, Fruitables aims to help promote healthy eating from an early age.

Reducing chances of diabetes through Grapes & Bananas:

A natural grape compound called pterostilbene can lower blood sugar, fight diabetes, and take on cancer (FC&A Medical Publishing, 2003).

The American Diabetes Association recommends figs as a high-fiber snack which slows down the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar.  Foods high in fiber causes your body to produce less insulin.
